JERUSALEM (Reuters) -- Hamas' military brigades claimed responsibility for firing a rocket at Jerusalem on Tuesday, and witnesses reported that projectiles fell near a settlement south of the city.

It was the second time rockets has been launched toward Jerusalem since Israel's Gaza offensive began last Wednesday. Air raid sirens had not been heard in the city for decades.

Palestinians in the West Bank village of Surif, south of Jerusalem, said a rocket fell nearby, damaging a water network. In nearby Beit Ummar, witnesses said a rocket hit near the Bat Ayin settlement.

Just north of Surif, residents of Gush Etzion settlement reported hearing an explosion, Israeli media said.

A spokesman for Israeli fire services in the West Bank told Israel's Ynet website one rocket landed near a Palestinian village and another near Hebron, and no injuries were reported. One rocket did not explode, and police sealed the area, the representative said.

After rocket warning sirens sounded in Jerusalem, Israeli police said the rocket did not hit the city of Jerusalem or cause any casualties.

"There are no indications of a rocket falling within the city," a police spokesman said on Israel's Channel 2 television.

Hamas' al-Qassam Brigades said it shelled Jerusalem with a projectile "in response on Israeli massacres, shelling homes & civil sites in Gaza."

Islamic Jihad and Hamas' armed wings have claimed responsibility for rockets that reached Tel Aviv and Jerusalem last week, during Israel's deadly bombardment of the Gaza Strip.
