RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas reiterated on Sunday that he is determined pursue a UN bid to upgrade Palestine's status at the international body.

Abbas made the remarks while addressing a pro UN-bid rally outside the presidential compound in Ramallah.

"Today, the UN, and tomorrow we will achieve another right which is national reconciliation, something we must achieve," the president said.

"I hope other issues will be solved so that Gaza will live in peace and security because they have suffered a lot during the war in 2008-2009 and the recent war," he added.

Abbas said the Palestinians have asked for a just peace built on the legitimate international right to statehood, adding that without East Jerusalem as a capital there can not be a state, or any solution to the conflict.

All factions support the UN bid, which will be followed by political reconciliation and then independence, Abbas said.

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki said that he will travel to New York on Sunday to supervise last-minute arrangements before a vote in the UN General Assembly on Nov. 29.

The bid seems certain to win approval in any vote in the 193-nation assembly and could also grant access to bodies such as the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where Palestine could file complaints against Israel.
