TEL AVIV, Israel (Ma'an) -- Two Israeli government ministers made comments linking President Mahmoud Abbas to his bete noire, Hamas and its resistance strategy, Israeli media reported on Sunday.

Abbas, whose commitment to non-violent diplomacy has earned him Western support but some Palestinian criticism, is heading to the UN this week to put Palestine's membership to a General Assembly vote.

Israeli Finance Minister Yuval Steinitz said Abbas' diplomatic move is "more dangerous than rocket attacks from Gaza," the Israel Hayom newspaper said.

Rocket attacks killed six Israelis during eight days of Israel's bombardment of Gaza which ended on Wednesday.

Meanwhile Environmental Protection Minister Gilad Erdan called Abbas a "member of Hamas in disguise," Israel Hayom reported.

Abbas' Fatah movement clashed violently with Hamas after the Islamist movement won elections in 2006, and split into separate governments in Gaza and the West Bank a year later.

Hamas and Fatah accuse each other of imprisoning their political supporters and stalling attempts to conclude a reconciliation deal to end their division.

But Erdan said Abbas' predecessor at least used to wear a military uniform, whereas Abbas is a "Hamas supporter disguised in a business suit."

Well, if by "hamas supporter" they mean a Palestinian supporter seeing as he's the president of the Palestinian people and represents them all, then sure, why not? Hamas are Palestinians too.

Don't take notice of what the idiot Israeli govt says or thinks. Palestinians should pursue its own cause and stop worrying about what Israel, US or some other westewrn govts think. They are all biased and history proves this point. They only stop resistence when it suits them.

I hope that Abu Mazen is a Hamas supporter, just as Ismael Haniyeh is a Fatah supporter, in that they both are working all they can for a united Palestine. Ideally, a little West Bank visit from Haniyeh and a little visit to Gaza from Abbas would be very beautiful ! Now !
