BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Preparations for the launch of Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus Christ, are in full swing, the newly elected mayor of the city Vera Baboun said.

Speaking to Ma’an Sunday evening, Baboun highlighted that preparations started late because of the Israeli military offensive on the Gaza Strip.

She pointed out that Christmas celebrations this year will focus on Palestinian triumph, peace, hope and selflessness.

The mayor highlighted that celebrations would be dependent upon the security situation in the Gaza Strip expressing hope that peace will prevail in Palestine and the region, and the crippling siege on the Gaza Strip will come to an end.

“May God’s peace be upon the martyrs of Gaza, and may injured people recover,” she said.

Baboun also highlighted that the Israeli offensive against Gaza had serious negative impact on tourism in Bethlehem.

Many tourists canceled their visits in November and December due to the situation in the Gaza Strip, Baboun said, quoting tourism agencies in Bethlehem.

Baboun was elected in October and is the first female mayor of Bethlehem.
