LONDON (Ma'an) -- Britain is prepared to back Palestine's bid for a status upgrade at the UN if certain conditions are met by the Palestinian Authority, the Financial Times reported on Monday.

Israel and the United States oppose the move at the United Nations and Britain has also expressed reservations about the bid. However, British officials told the Financial Times that the UK will support Abbas in the Nov. 29 move if he provides assurances in three areas.

Firstly, the UN resolution must not be be used to join the International Criminal Court or UN agencies. The resolution must not be used as a basis to join the UN Security Council and the Palestinian Authority must also renew its commitment to negotiations with Israel without preconditions, the FT reported.

"We want to get behind the Palestinian moderates and strengthen their hand," said a UK official. "Abbas needs support and we recognize that," the official told the FT.

Israel also wants the PLO to include a clause stating it will not request membership of the International Criminal Court, where it could charge Israeli leaders with war crimes, the Israeli daily Haaretz reported Tuesday.

The Palestinian bid seems certain to win approval in any vote in the 193-nation general assembly.

I have seen no claims by Abbas that he was going to run straight to the ICC. In fact I have read that the first order of business after securing the vote will be PA reconciliation with Gaza and then negotiations with Israel concerning land swaps per Obama support for such. I say let USA and UK hang on this. Stick to your plan Mr. Abbas. Why dilute or weaken your state rights just to please these bullies? You have been shown the way around the US in this and they can not stop you. Go for it!!

It is totally unjust for UK to request Abbas to add the non-use of the right to join the ICC. I hope Abbas will not fall in the trap. The right to take israel to the ICC is the main benefit of the recognition as an Observer State. Israel can go on committing war crimes without impunity.

Palestinians should have a Unified Government and after gaining the status as an Observer State they will have more power to demand the implementation of UN Resolutions. They don't have to keep begging for negotiations and being played with by israel and us while settlers are taking more land and attacking Palestinians. They have to stop the way they are dealing with the occupier and start using a proactive and assertive approach because they are the ones who own their land and rights.

So if I got it right, UK let the hillybilly's in, the hillybilly's stole Palestinian land and killed lots of Palestinians, you can't count the refugees and now UK is telling the Palestinians to behave? Really disgusting!

These requests by the UK are completely insane - why would Palestine agree to those requests? Why doesn't the UK, US & Israel drop out of UN agencies if it's such a great idea?
