GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- New types of fresh fish can be found in Gaza's markets following an easing of Israel's coastal blockade over the weekend.

As part of a ceasefire to end Israel's eight-day war on Gaza, Israel agreed to allow fishermen to sail six nautical miles off the coast of Gaza instead of three, which had been the limit under Israel's siege.

Fishermen welcomed the move, but said they hoped the fishing zone would be extended further.

The head of Gaza's fishing association Mahfouth al-Kabriti says that the 6-mile zone is mostly sandy, and fishermen need to go 10 or 12 miles out to sea for sufficient hauls.

Al-Kabriti told Ma'an that historically, fishing had been a key sector in the local economy. Under Israel's blockade, most fish is imported through tunnels from Egypt or harvested from fish farms.

In the Oslo Accords, Israel agreed to a 20-nautical-mile fishing zone off Gaza's coast but it has imposed a 3-mile limit for several years, opening fire at fishermen who strayed further.

Israel has controlled Gaza waters since its occupation of the area in 1967, and has kept several warships stationed off the coast since 2008.

This news makes me happy, I wander for how long.... "Israel" never kept their word. If I ever see something in the shops in Holland from Palestine, I will buy it (even if I don't like or need it, I WILL buy it)

I have found Palestinian oil in middle estearn shops in Canada and it is my prefered oil, and I boycott any product that is kosher. I have less choices but it makes feel that in my limited ways I am supporting Palestine.

"Who the hell gave HAMAS, AND THE ISLAMIC BROTHERHOOD, the right to control people like this," in either Gaza or Egypt ?? And, whether you like it, or not, International Law "gives Israel the right": - to maintain a Naval Blockade, - to defend it's border fences, and also - to strike at rocket launchers before civilians are targeted, and it will remain so, until Gaza accepts PEACE with Israel !!!

#5:You forget,Israel refuses to formally define its "borders",still! Bravo Palestinians! You DESERVE it so much, after 80yrs of suffering under foreign Zionist/Israeli invaders, occupiers, colonists. My family buy Palestinian products(free of Israel control)&boycott Israel's,until the occupation ENDS! It's time Obama EARNED his Nobel "trinket",& showed the world that USG can HONOR international laws. And,D.C.needs a BIGTIME foreign policy OVERHAUL,away from Zionism,to keep us SAFE,when power shifts.
