GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces detained nine fishermen off Gaza's north coast on Wednesday, a local official said.

The head of Gaza's fishing association, Mahfouth al-Kabriti, told Ma'an that Israel's navy opened fire at two Palestinian fishing boats six miles off the coast.

The navy then seized both boats and detained nine fishermen, al-Kabriti added. The boats belong to Murad al-Hassi and the Baker family.

An Israeli army spokesman said that two fishing boats deviated from the designated fishing area and after failing to respond to calls to stop, were apprehended by Israel's navy.

The passengers were taken for questioning in the Israeli city of Ashdod, he added.

As part of a ceasefire to end Israel's recent eight-day war on Gaza, Israel agreed to allow fishermen to sail six nautical miles off the coast of Gaza instead of three, which had been the limit under Israel's siege

In the Oslo Accords, Israel agreed to a 20-nautical-mile fishing zone off Gaza's coast but it has imposed a 3-mile limit for several years, opening fire at fishermen who strayed further.

Israel has controlled Gaza waters since its occupation of the area in 1967, and has kept several warships stationed off the coast since 2008.

I've been to many Holocaust exhibitions around the world and I'm very upset I've never seen the picture of Palestinian fishermen in them. Every Holocaust exhibition around the world should have a picture of Hitler next to all the Palestinian fishermen killed and arrested by Israeli Self Defense Heroes! Palestinian fishermen hate the Jews so much they want to eat all the fish in the world and never let any Jews eat fish. Every fish Palestinian fishermen catch is a war crime. Never again!!!

Same old song. I can't remember 1 single agreement they didn't violate. Thank G-D... More than half of EU states will back Palestinian bid at UN, the rest already do or will follow.

Hamas agreed to the 6 mile limit. The fishermen cannot make up their own rules. They went beyond. they were stopped. Plain and simple. Do not put more into it then there is.

Arnold where did the article say that they were beyond 6 miles? How many Israeli fishermen have the palestinians arrested? In case you didn't already know the answer is zero.

To Arnold #6: ' The fishermen cannot make up their own rules...' But Israel can? Anyway, if we're going to stick to things people agreed to, howzabout those 1947 borders?

Hamas did NOT agree to the six mile limit -- and there is no reason why they should. The Oslo accords are very clear in granting Palestine 20 miles of fishing territory. The fishing fleet is in the right, in terms of international law and agreements which Israel signed -- there is NO recognized agreement limiting fishing (or other economic activity) to just 6 (or previously, 3) nautical miles. For a lasting peace: end the blockade!

What's the seating capacity at the World Court. Whatever it is they'll need to increase it.

Hamas is at fault agreeing to anything imposed by Israel. Israel is at fault thinking they can impose any such restriction on another nation, especially one at whose expense they have prospered. Palestinian fishermen cannot be restricted from access to water that is theirs. The Isralite piracy is utterly unacceptable. If there was one iota of justice in this world, it would be Israel that was subjected to such restriction!

Arnold - what possible harm can be done by fisherman going our further than the 6 mile limit, what with Israeli warships patrolling the area relentlessly. They can't do any smuggling, they can't do much at all except fish, so what on earth is the bi deal? Isn't Israel is always saying they "gave back" Gaza? But not its territorial waters? What a joke.

Neither can the Israelis make up their own rules. International law specifies 20 miles!!

#13 gabi - What's the big deal? - there's the gas fields out in Gaza waters and Israel wants to get her greedy mitts on it. Not content with their own gas fields, they have to steal someone else's too. Why do you think the USA clings to Israel like a limpet - it's nothing to do with Israel's security and everything to do with ga$$$$$$$$.

1- "As ALWAYS Palestinians can't wait to violate the truce", where even Maan says they were at the Six Mile Maximum", and poor fisherman have no radar gear, so they had no way of knowing that they had "violate the truce" !! 14- Hamas "makes up their own rules, and International law" also specifies NO Terror and NO War Crimes, and the PLO also "made up their own rules, and the Oslo Accords specifies NO UN Bid !! 15- "How about more realistice 2012 (Gaza & Areas A/B) borders ??
