BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- The Palestinian Authority foreign ministry said Thursday it would re-evaluate ties with countries that oppose Palestine's bid to upgrade its status at the UN.

A ministry statement said the Palestinians hoped foreign countries would not only vote to upgrade Palestine's status but also pressure Israel to abide by the terms of the peace process.

The ministry thanked countries that have already indicated they will support the bid when it comes up for a vote at the General Assembly later Thursday.

With overwhelming support from the developing world, Palestine appears certain to earn approval in the 193-member UN General Assembly for a status upgrade to "observer state" on Thursday.

But some countries -- including Israel and the United States -- oppose the bid and have threatened sanctions against the Palestinian Authority if the vote goes as planned.

Germany said Thursday it would abstain from voting.

It's long overdue ie. rethink of ties with countries who vote against an upgrade. With majority of countries supporting the upgrade it will leave the rest in isolation espeically ISRAEL AND THE DOUBLE FACE US. And then they preach democracy & peace to the rest of the world. The world is watching!

It is a "good idea to cut relations with Germany, the USA", and Israel too, and then to learn how to live without both international donations & trade !!

It will be a big shame if the Czech Republic votes against - the only country in Europe which did not say yet it will not do so. The Czechs were sometimes more radical than others - more Stalinist than Russians in the 50s. Now they support Israeli occupation of Palestine although they were occupied themselves by Russians. Really strange people in certain respect...

I am sure that a majority of Germans support the Palestinian UN bid. Read the comments in the newspapers and in the online media. But the german government does not vote according to the majority.

Cameron of the UK spent a few days in the UAE last week , so wondering what he will do ? If the UAE and the other GCC countries do not put their foot down , then the Arab Unity would be a farce . The GCC thinks it needs the West for 'protection ' and trade , but it can mix and match with countries like France , Italy , Spain and even China for technology and a tiny bit of 'protection' . They need to leverage their rightfull position in the world and protect Justice for Arabs. We all need to.

"The Palestinian Authority foreign ministry said Thursday it would re-evaluate ties with countries that oppose Palestine's bid to upgrade its status at the UN."

Oh dear, my country's government only decided to abstain. Would you be kind enough to count that as opposition, and exclude the UK from your Christmas card list? Maybe you would even be so good as to tell us to stick our aid money too.

I've just heard my country will abstain, and I'm ashamed of and disgusted with my government. Unfortunately, we are paralysed by our history when there's need to make bold decisions that fly in the face of Israel and/or the US.

10 ) The UN Bid / Leads to POVERTY
29/11/2012 23:37
There was a real peace, in exchange for real statehood process, AND now there is a NOTHING, in exchange for non-member UN statehood, where all that will follow is poverty from a certain decline, if not complete halt in both international donations and Israeli cooperations in trade !!

the little money PA receives is nothing for the compensation that Palestinians and their descendants since 1948 should receive to be compensated for the zionist take over of Palestine and the making of Palestinians refugees in their own land. It is israel that is receiving HUGE amount of aid ($, military, technology and more) from US and European tax-payers in spite of their on-going war crimes against Palestinians.

It comes down to money. Poor Palestine will be look kindly on all who provide it - no vote or not.

Silence, when it comes to war crimes, and mass murder,is NOT 'GOLDEN'.It's criminal COMPLICITITY! Abstention is the same as selective silence. They better have a damn good VALID,PUBLICIZED,reason for WHY they abstain from the exercising of international/universal laws, treaties, conventions!!!Shame on you Poland, after ALL YOU WENT through yourself, before, under Nazism! That's selective MISCARRIAGE of justice!

Given Britain's historical responsibility for the mess in Palestine, I am not sure which way round the "arrogant sods" label best fits here. If anything, the UK ought to quadruple or quintuple its aid -- call it conscience money (if it but had a conscience). If the Palestinians are arrogant sods, the British Government are at best arrogant cheap sods.
