JERUSALEM (Ma’an) -- Hamas officials welcomed Thursday night's UN General Assembly vote recognizing Palestine as a non-member state.
Hamas politburo member Ezzat al-Rishq said the party celebrated the state of Palestine, and its recognition is a victory for all Palestinians.
The step should be complemented by a strategic and national vision based on resistance and national rights, he said on his official Facebook account.
Meanwhile, Hamas chief-in-exile Khalid Mashaal said the vote would "unify Palestinian national efforts" as part of the reconciliation process with Abbas's nationalist Fatah movement.
"I told Abu Mazen (Abbas) we want this move to be part of a national Palestinian strategy," Mashaal said in an interview with Reuters.
Shortly before the vote, which was almost certain to pass, Hamas prime minister in Gaza Ismail Haniyeh said his government would support any political achievements for the Palestinian people in their quest for statehood.
He cautioned that any moves should not abandon strategic principles or the right of Palestinian refugees to return to their homes.
