BRUSSELS (Reuters) -- The European Union has summoned Israel's ambassador to discuss the bloc's concerns over Israeli plans to expand its settlements in the occupied West Bank, an EU foreign affairs spokeswoman said Wednesday.

"The Israeli ambassador has been invited by the Executive Secretary General of the EEAS (European External Action Service) to meet to set out the depth of our concerns," Maja Kocijancic said.

The Executive Secretary General -- the senior diplomat in charge of policy for EU foreign affairs chief Catherine Ashton -- is Pierre Vimont, former French ambassador to Washington.

Several EU countries have already called in Israeli ambassadors for consultations, but EU states have been struggling to agree on a common response to the settlement expansion plans.

The spokeswoman said the EU reaction to Israel's new building plans would depend on the extent to which they threatened the establishment of a viable state of Palestine in the future.

Israel moved forward Wednesday with plans to build some 3,000 settler homes in one of the most sensitive areas of the occupied West Bank, in defiance of international protests.

The European Union has repeatedly spoken out against Israeli settlements on land the Palestinians want for their state. Ashton said on Sunday that she was "extremely concerned" by the plans.

EU regimes have supported Zionists & Jewish settlements & colonization in Palestine since more than 7 decades in order to get rid from EU-Jews. EU regimes & Zionists are part of our problem and not part of the solution. All EU regimes have participated with Zionists in the ethnical cleansing of Palestinian people (Nakba) & also by economic, media & military support. Once EU regimes admit helping the Zionists in ethnical cleansing of Palestinian people, it will be the first step for solution.

ABBAS' answer to Israel's E-1 area building has been given and it
IS NOTHING more than the words, that "it can cannot go unanswered",
BUT despite his FANTASY, there exist NO "legal and legitimate means to stop", Israel's E-1 area building plan, which will continue regardless of both useless Abbas words, EU summons', or equally useless Resolutions, pretending that the UNGA can award Palestine borders that never historically existed either !!!

#1 The Europeans will never recognize their role in Palestinian dispossession. At least not in our lifetime. The question is...how will the Palestinian leadership address the apartheid Israeli right-wing regime, and the European apathetic and passive regimes eager to keep their "Jewish problem" in check? You have raised an excellent point. In my opinion all forms of resistance must be implemented, including armed resistance, since Palestine has become a recognized occupied state.

The EU showed little concern when Gazan rockets rained down on Israel over the last four years.

I think it is just a show because of the new status of Palestine and its right to use the international tribunal. I do not believe these no-self-respect europeans and americans. By sleeping with the zionists they are the cause of the injustice.

Various EU SUMMONS lead to USELESS words, pictures, and handshakes, but it will lead nothing usefull, just LIKE, the King of Jordan's 'historic' West Bank visit, or the recent UNGA RESOLUTIONS !!!
