RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas on Monday met Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, in Doha, Palestinian Authority media reported.

Abbas was joined by his diplomatic adviser Majdi al-Khalidi, PLO negotiator Saeb Erekat, PA Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki and Palestine's ambassador in Qatar Munir Ghannam.

The president discussed recent developments with the Qatari emir, including Palestine's admission to the UN as a non-member state, and efforts toward national reconciliation, Wafa reported.

Sheikh Hamad in October was the first regional leader to visit the Gaza Strip in a trip seen as breaking the diplomatic isolation of Hamas.

The emir pledged $400 million in aid to Gaza during the visit and urged Hamas and Fatah to reconcile.

"There are no peace negotiations, and there is no clear strategy of resistance and liberation. Why shouldn't brothers sit together and reconcile?" he said during a speech at Gaza's Islamic University

"Surely you realize that your division is the source of greater harm to your cause and the cause of all Arabs," he said. "It is time you end the chapter of differences and open a wide chapter for reconciliation."
