RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas wrote to US President Barack Obama on Saturday to offer his condolences after a shooting in an American elementary school killed 26 people.

Twenty children were killed by a heavily armed gunman who opened fire at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday. He killed at least 26 people there before turning his gun on himself.

Authorities found 18 children and seven adults, including the gunman, dead at the school, and two children were pronounced dead later after being taken to a hospital.

"Most of those who died were just young children with their whole lives ahead of them. And every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt," Obama said.

Abbas expressed his condolences for the American people and the families of the victims, Palestinian Authority news agency Wafa said.

The Ma'alot massacre[1] was a terrorist attack in 1974 which included a two-day hostage-taking of 115 people which ended in the deaths of over 25 hostages. It began when three armed Palestinian terrorists of the Democratic Front for the Liberation of Palestine[2] entered Israel from Lebanon. Soon afterwards they attacked a van, killing two Israeli Arab women while injuring a third and entered an apartment building in the town of Ma'alot, where they killed a couple and their four-year-old so

Bravo, Abbas. This is an act of greatness. Palestinians will succeed due to their unbreakable inner sense of ethics and long suffering.

How many condolences did Abbas send to the victims of Cast Lead? Hundreds of children died in that war crime and from what I recall Abbas was pretty quiet.

A decent, statesmanly gesture from the Palestinian President to the American President, declining the opportunity, lept upon shamelessly by Israel after 9/11 to infer "now you know what WE go through".

to zion #3 'The Ma'alot massacre[1] was a terrorist attack in 1974...' Is this some kind of mantra? Does it actually work? Or do thoughts seep through anyway?

# 3 - the bombing of the King David Hotel in 1946 was a terrorist attack by Jewish "freedom fighters", where several young Jewish women were massacred along with 91 British officers. This attack left the Brits completely dispirited and led to the idea that the Mandate had to end as they could not win against terrorist Zionists - so the UN talked about partition, and so your country, Israel was created a couple of years later. So what's your point??? What's the connection you're trying to make?
