Refugee camps to escalate UNRWA protests

RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The heads of popular committees in refugee camps across the West Bank met Monday in Ramallah and agreed to escalate protests against UNRWA.

Demonstrators will shut down all UNRWA offices on Tuesday to protest the dismissal of over 100 staff at the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, the committee chairman said.

UNRWA says it is unable to renew the contracts of 114 employees due to a reduction in donor funding, on which the agency relies.

"As painful as this decision is, it is the one option that minimizes the impact on services to Palestine refugees in the West Bank of reduced emergency funding to UNRWA," the agency said in a statement Friday.
