GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Some 436 couples wed in a mass ceremony on Thursday in Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip.

Leaders of Hamas, Fatah, Islamic Jihad, the Palestinian People's Party and the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine attended the wedding, which was paid for by UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan's foundation.

Ahmed Yousef, former legal adviser to Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh, thanked the UAE for supporting Palestinians and wished the newly-weds a happy married life.

Fatah MP Ashraf Juma said another wedding for 1,000 couples would be announced soon.

Shirley S / Australia: you can't blame the occupation for the inbreeding. Palestinians also from the West Bank suffer from the genetic diseases, caused mainly by marrying and having kids with close relatives (cousins etc.). And surely you know the occupation has nothing to do with the fact that they want their girls to marry a relative, so they know the family and the money stays in the family.

Shirley, You are absolutely right. Palestinians are trapped in Gaza, and in the West Bank where their sheer survival challenges systematic policies of ethnic cleansing. There are not many outsiders who choose to put themselves in that abject situation. Palestinians are surviving on meagre resources, and constant threat of imprisonment and death. For the Zionists Occupation does not even EXIST, let alone 'having anything to do' or responsible for any any ill impact on Palestinian society!
