BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A Bethlehem artist hopes to enter the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest ever model of baby Jesus, carved in olive wood.

Zakaria Zakaria's 300-kg carving was unveiled in Bethlehem on Thursday, made from a 700-kg olive tree imported from Italy.

Ibrahim Faltas, the head of the John Paul II Foundation, had the idea for the carving and the organization supported the endeavor, along with Children Without Borders, foundation coordinator Suhail Daibes told Ma'an.

Daibes said work on the carving began in August, adding that Jesus was at the heart of Bethlehem.

Faltas told Ma'an that Jesus sent a message of peace and love to the whole world.

No wonder that the olive tree had to be imported from Italy. Israel is uprooting thousands of Palestinian olive trees to build their walls and settlements.
