HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Unknown assailants on Friday torched the car of former chief justice Sheikh Tayseer al-Tamimi in Hebron.

Al-Tamimi told Ma'an he considered the attack an assassination attempt on him and his family. He said his wife smelt smoke early Friday morning, and saw their car on fire. Four explosions followed, al-Tamimi said.

The former supreme judge said the attack was politically motivated.

Al-Tamimi recently started a new political party Haris, or Guard. The Nov. 12 launch of the party was disrupted by Palestinian Authority security services, al-Tamimi said at the time.

The Palestinian Authority Ministry of Interior said the party was not licensed. Al-Tamimi says he submitted an application to register the party on Oct. 31 and that legally, as the ministry did not respond within five days, the party is automatically approved.

Al-Tamimi also linked the car attack to renewed interest in the cause of death of late President Yasser Arafat.

The sheikh was a close confidant of Arafat and present at his death. He told Ma'an the attack on his car was an attempt to silence him.

Firefighters extinguished the blaze and told Ma'an there were tires in front of and behind the car, signalling a deliberate attack.

Al-Tamimi accused police of negligence, complaining that they came to the scene and left without investigating.
