GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- Israeli forces shot and injured five Palestinians on Friday in the northern Gaza Strip, a health ministry spokesman said.

Ashraf al-Qidra said five Palestinians were hospitalized with moderate wounds after being shot near the border with Israel.

Medics told Ma'an a number of injured Palestinians were brought to the Kamal Udwan and al-Awdah hospitals.

An Israeli military spokesman said several Palestinians "approached the security fence in the northern Gaza Strip.

Soldiers acted "according to the rules of engagement," the spokesman told Ma'an, declining to comment on whether or not live fire was used.

Israeli troops have shot at Gazans near the border at least 10 times since the end of an eight-day offensive last month. Some 30 people have been wounded in the incidents, Gaza officials said.

Over 170 Palestinians, mostly civilians, were killed in last month's offensive. Six Israelis, including two soldiers, were also killed during the war that Israel launched with the declared aim of curbing cross-border rocket fire.

These 5 Palis are extremely lucky to be wounded instead of killed. Standard rules of engagement for any border guards consists of posted and/or oral warnings, followed by kill shots.
I know because I worked in Border Patrol.

Please note that this is a photo of Israeli soldiers shooting across the border INTO someone else's territory. If they want to defend their border, why not put the free fire zone on their OWN territory?

Untill there is more than just a ceasefire, and some progress towards peace, and accepting Israel, it will NOT be safe to approach the Gaza-Israel border,
for people on either side of the border, and no realistic person should expect otherwise.

Maybe the idea is to bait the Palestinians into firing rockets at Christmas. Tea leaves suggest the Israelis have seized on the idea of making the Palestinians look bad at Christmas this year.

When you have a fence as long and as high as the fence between Gaza and Israel why would you shoot anyone when they were on the other side. If they jump the fence I'll understand to take defensive measures but they didn't. If they have fired any weapons from the other side of the fence I will also understand, but they didn't. So Israel need to learn about the rules of engagement. Don't shoot unless you shot at.

So far the Israelis have violated the cease-fire at least 6 times and wounded 30 Palestinians, while not a shot has been fired from the Palestinian side. These agricultural workers have the right to work in safety on the Gazan side of the fence. A familial pattern unfolds: that of incessant Israeli provocations, until one day the Palestinians respond and are blamed for aggression, giving Israel the opportunity to inflict more death and destruction on Gaza under the pretext of "self-defense".

A concrete wall is needed. This is deliberately shooting civilians for using their own property.

The prison fence around Gaza is built on Palestinian land. Palestine extends well beyond the invader's blockade, south, east, west, and north. Israel's only legal borders are those as declared in 1948 based on the UN maps of 1947. No other legal description of Israel exists.

# 1 - When you worked for "border control" did you do fire over the other side of your border? Tibi - again you talk nonsense. Why does Gaza, which Israel claimed they "gave back" years ago have to still abide by Israel's bad tempered nonsense? "Don't go near our border"!!!! The Gazans should say to the IDF "Don't go near our border or you'll get shot." Same sort of logic. Colin's right - the aim is to provoke until Gazans react, and then Israel will bomb the hell out of them. Again.

'Don't shoot unless you shot at'. Joe, why should we wait to be shot before we shoot? These people are not allowed to be in the area they are in and will have been given warnings to stop and turn around, how do the soldiers know they don't have bombs strapped to their chest?
