BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Fatah's advisory council met in Ramallah on Saturday to discuss the future of the party and the Palestinian Authority, a Fatah leader said.

President Mahmoud Abbas told the council on Saturday that the Palestinian Authority cannot continue under financial siege, Mohammad Horani told Ma'an. The president "knows the reality of the Palestinian Authority," Horani said.

Israel is withholding around $100 million monthly in Palestinian tax revenue as punishment for the UN's acceptance of Palestine as a non-member state.

Horani said Israel was extorting the Palestinian Authority and that the international community should step in and support the West Bank government, noting that Arab countries have yet to follow through on a pledge to provide a financial safety net.

The council discussed internal party matters and presented a document outlining future steps for Palestine following its admission to the UN, Horani said.

On Sunday, it will discuss restructuring the party and holding a seventh conference, he said, adding that the Fatah revolutionary council would meet Monday to discuss internal issues.
