Farmers: Nablus village flooded by settlement sewage

Sabastiya's mayor says the sewage is ruining fields and crops.
NABLUS (Ma'an) -- Farmers in the northern West Bank village of Sebastiya in Nablus say their fields have become a dump for waste-water from the nearby Israeli settlement Shave Shomron.

Since early January, settlers have been pumping their sewage into the al-Khallah area of Sebastiya, flooding fields and damaging crops, local mayor Nael al-Shaer told Ma'an on Tuesday.

He urged the Palestinian Authority to intervene.

PA official Ghassan Daghlas, who monitors settlement activities in the northern West Bank, urged international human rights groups to step in, and called on international representatives to visit Sebastiya and witness the situation.

Local farmer Ahmad Kayid said fruit crops were inedible because of the sewage.

"Settlers are trying to spoil as much as they can of Palestinian fields in an attempt to force farmers to desert their lands completely," Kayid told Ma'an.

Get some shovels or a backhoe and create a sewage pond. Or - better yet - plug the outlet pipe; the settlement folks will find a good solution quickly.

These settlers are just the classiest of people. Wouldn't you love to have them as neighbours? It should be relatively simple for Israeli authorities to follow this up - if they want to - and prosecute those responsible - if they want to. Will they? No, settlers are immune from following the law, and they certainly believe themselves immune from exercising morality - despite spouting religion all the time. Truly despicable people.

The symbolism! Someone should write a poem. "Settlers are trying to spoil as much as they can of Palestinian fields in an attempt to force farmers to desert their lands completely." Farmer Ahmad Kayid is probably quite right. Far from a neighbourly accident for which you'd say sorry, or neighbourly rudeness or indifference to the impact you're having (like playing loud music), this seems a deliberate attempt to drive the farmers out, empty the land and seize it...which seems downright psychotic

There are no words for such outrageous acts and the tragedy of the situation is that Israel can act in this way with impunity. Israel feels so powerful and beyond reproach but I cannot imagine how any of them can put their head on their pillows at night and sleep the sleep of the righteous. It is not a country many of us would wish to live in. But we are aware now Israel and will no longer buy your sunshine or goods.

@ 5), You're damn right and well-said. I've been trying to find out more about this ... It IS damn wrong. Hopefully, I'll be able to post with some better news about when this is going to be rectified ... I know who to contact ... I'm only an individual but I'll do the best I can to see if this sickening situation can be corrected. There's no damn good reason for this to exist if true.

I think a lot (the madder ones) sleep the sleep of the far-gone cult member, convinced of the rightness of their loony/evil cause. If there was ever a little voice inside saying this violence and cruelty to others is wrong, well, it's overwhelmed by brainwashing. Think Hitler Youth, or "Squeaky" Fromme or Jonestown, lining up to drink the Kool-Aid.

I told a retired GP about this, who told me that if the sewage is buried deeply enough, it would compost down into useful manure. She didn't know details of how to do it but I expect they'd be available on the internet.
