QALQILIYA (Ma'an) -- Israeli soldiers on Wednesday beat a teenager at a checkpoint south of Nablus in the northern West Bank, the boy said.

Ibrahim Adnan Hasan, 17, told Ma'an that soldiers stopped the car he was traveling in at Huwwara checkpoint and checked passengers' ID cards.

"When I said I was from Kafr Qaddum, the soldiers all of a sudden started to beat me and insult me saying that it was in retaliation to the weekly rally in my village," said Hasan, who was badly bruised.

Kafr Qaddum holds weekly rallies demanding that Israel reopen the main street in the village east of Qalqiliya.

Murad Ishteiwi, a spokesman for the protests, said Wednesday's assault was not unprecedented. He said soldiers frequently attacked residents of Kafr Qaddum at checkpoints.

An Israeli military spokeswoman did not immediately return a call seeking comment.
