BETHLEHEM (Ma’an) -- Activists raised Palestinian flags at the entrance to a Bethlehem-area settlement on Friday, at a protest in solidarity with Palestinians jailed in Israel.
Activists gathered at the Elazer settlement, south of Bethlehem, chanting "Free the prisoners," local committee activist Muhammad Braijieh said.
The settlement is built on lands belonging to the Bethlehem town of al-Khader.
Israeli troops intervened in the protest and a fistfight erupted, he said. An Israeli military spokeswoman said around 30 Palestinians blocked the entrance to Elazer and forces asked them to leave, but she was not aware of any physical confrontations.
After the protest, activists blocked the bypass road in front of the settlement. The protesters condemned the fatal shooting by Israeli forces of Bethlehem woman Lubna Hanash on Wednesday.
