ADDIS ABABA (Ma’an) -- President Mahmoud Abbas said Sunday that while Israeli governmental coalitions may change, the demands for peace will not, according to the official Palestinian news agency.

Abbas, addressing the African Union summit in the Ethiopian capital, said Israel must end settlement activities, release all Palestinian prisoners, and resolve all final status issues with Palestine before peace can be achieved, according to Wafa.

Israel's politicians are currently wrangling over the composition of a new coalition government after Tuesday's national elections.

Whatever the outcome, Abbas said, Israel has no right to impose a blockade on Gaza and racial discrimination in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, which he said reflected the practices of apartheid.

US-brokered peace talks broke down in 2010 after Israel declined to renew a partial freeze on settlement building.

Since then Israel has accelerated construction in the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem - and the Palestine has taken steps to gain greater recognition at the United Nations and its agencies.

DEMANDS is a negative word. The term actions that ppromote a just peace" is more applicable....And that is the kind of language we need to learn how to speak. Israel does not say we hate the Arabs. They say " Look how the Arabs ( the world)hate us".

Then status quo. Can't abandon preconditions? Don't want to negotiate? Fine. The situation stays the same, except Israel continues to build settlements and fences until Palestine has nothing to negotiate. There is your Palestine, complete with borders imposed by its own hand.

What peace demands? You refused PEACE in 1948, 1967, 2000, and 2008. 2008 you were offered everything you wanted and more by Olmert.

# 1 - Joel grow up! Haven't you heard what the Israelis are saying about Palestinians even in parliament Just read a bit more than the hasbara spouted out. Or better still, just read what Peace Now, or the soldiers who speak out, have to say about it. Actions? Look at settlers' actions - especially that very classy lot who have managed (without any condemnation from Israel or you) to direct their sewerage to run onto Palestinian land and crops. Lovely people! Don't have to say we hate you.

Joe, the "victims" are waving their guns about at people way outside their legal borders. This is detestable behaviour for "a moral people" and is not behaviour which deserves praise.

There is nothing new here and I'm glad the President of the State of Palestine has simply re-stated what he's consistently said. Before the explicit U.N. recognition of its nationhood, one might have honestly said the State of Palestine implicitly existed on a "de facto" basis. That is (to 138 nations) no longer the case. So, despite anything our (politically) leftist politicians in our Knesset (parliament) or groups like "Peace Now" may say, let me honestly state what is happening (cont.)

Despite the separation wall; our conditions for resuming "peace" talks (translation: our government's lies); our continued "cooperation" with the State of Palestine on previous agreements made before U.N. State of Palestine recognition; etc., we are (in the process of) annexing all of the W. Bank. Yes, blatant actions of purposeful neglect (sewage running onto areas where Palestinians live) is absolutely wrong (I've said elsewhere I'm trying to get this corrected) but our goals are CLEAR.
