RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- The UK on Friday donated emergency equipment to Palestinian civil defense services after heavy rains caused serious damage in the West Bank earlier in January.

"We admired the efforts the Palestinian civil defense services exerted during the heavy rain which affected the West Bank lately. It is a pleasure to offer this support which will help rescue more lives in similar conditions," said David Robson, an official of the UK Consulate in Jerusalem.

The British support team in Ramallah provided the equipment, in cooperation with the UN and World Food Program, the consulate said in a statement.

In early January, extremely heavy rainfall in the West Bank severely damaged homes, particularly in the north.

Palestinian civil defense crews attended to over 1,600 emergencies over four days, including missing people, flooded homes and fires.

Over 1,000 volunteers assisted the crews, which suffered from a lack of basic emergency equipment.
