RAMALLAH (Ma’an) -- A Palestinian man attempted to set himself on fire on Saturday, at a protest against the removal of street-sellers in Ramallah.
The youth doused himself in fuel before being stopped and arrested by police.
Dozens of street-sellers had gathered in the main square of Ramallah, al-Manara, chanting slogans against a crackdown against their trade started on Saturday morning.
The traders, who lay out their wares on the pavement, said they have no other income for their families. They called on the authorities to provide them with alternative sites to practice their trade.
Police across Ramallah, al-Bireh and Beituniya municipalities launched the crackdown saying the street-sellers were blocking pavements and the passage of pedestrians.
