RAMALLAH (Ma'an) -- A 47-year-old officer in the Palestinian Preventive Security Service in Jericho died suddenly on Tuesday in unclear circumstances, his family says.

Salah Mohammad Jalayta left his home in Jericho in the eastern West Bank early Tuesday to appear before a commission of inquiry at the Preventive Security Service headquarters in Ramallah, his family told Ma'an.

A relative Yahya Jalayta, a spokesman of Jericho tribes including the Jalayta family, told a Ma'an reporter that the cause of death remained unknown. Forensic tests will determine the cause of death, he added.

He denied reports the victim was killed by a gunshot.

The officer died at 9 a.m, his family said, refusing to comment on the cause of death until after an autopsy.
