GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- A man jailed by the Hamas government in Gaza died of meningitis on Friday morning, the interior ministry said.

Mahrous Fathi Nassar, 37, who was in police custody, was taken to the intensive car unity of al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City, where he died, ministry spokesman Ibrahim Salah said.

Rights groups have expressed alarm at the number of deaths inside Palestinian prisons.

The death of 52-year-old Atef Khamis Derbas in December, who was being held at Ansar prison in Gaza City for unpaid debts, prompted an official investigation.

Derbas' family strongly believe Atef died due to medical negligence and poor conditions in jail, according to rights group al-Haq.

On Oct. 16, 27-year-old Mohammad Said Al-Zaqzouq man died in police custody in Khan Younis, south Gaza.

Police said he had committed suicide, and a police source told the Palestinian Center for Human Rights that officers gave him the blanket with which he later strangled himself.

Where are you Mel? Colin? Shirley? Gabi? The Palestinians need your voices - you must cry out against human rights abuses by the PA against their own people. You must demand that Fatah and Hamas embrace and enforce civil and human rights for all Palestinians. Otherwise, what you you shouting for? Why do you want another despotic Arab dictatorship? Why are you silent when Palestinians need your support?

The reason prison conditions in Gaza are so bad is because ISRAEL TARGETED THE PRISONS in the last two offensives, the REFUSED ENTRY OF REBUILDING MATERIALS, so prisoners must be housed in over-crowded and bad conditions. The Gaza justice ministry is about to launch a building programme in an attempt to improve conditions - but they are hampered by the ILLEGAL ISRAELI BLOCKADE. Who is creating the conditions that lead to tragedies such as this man's death? Not the PA/Hamas, but Israel.

#2 You are a pretty good stand up comedian. Why don't you add that the Ayatolahs in Tehran are really ISRAELI MOSSAD AGENTS, that HORSI of Egypt is in fact a CIA agent and ASSAD of Syria is an undercover ISRAELI AGENT. That should round things out for your nonsense. Mel and Colin can then join the chorus to parrot your words. Heck, you may even get a post at the BBC.
