Obama stands by Hagel for defense secretary, White House says

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- President Barack Obama stands behind his nominee for defense secretary, former Republican Senator Chuck Hagel, and Senate delays in Hagel's confirmation are "unconscionable," a White House spokesman said Thursday.

Delays in Hagel's nomination do not send a good signal to US allies or troops, White House spokesman Josh Earnest said.

"The president stands strongly behind Senator Hagel," Earnest said.

"It does not send a favorable signal for Republicans in the United States Senate to delay a vote on the president's nominee, a nominee who is a member of their own party, to be the Secretary of Defense."

As a US Vet,I've a question for Chuck?As a Vet too,how does Chuck stand re:the new Pentagon plan,to award US DRONE OPERATORS (faraway,with a stick,pushing a'Kill'button),the Distinquished Warfare Medal(DWM),considered ABOVE BRONZE MEDAL?Does"extraordinary achievement"include sitting at home base,with FOX news on screen above,Pepsi&pizza in 1 hand,&"willy-nilly"joystick in the other hand of VIDEO-GAME PLAYERS murdering INNOCENT CIVILIANS?New definitions of "Distinquished Warfare",eh Chuck? Hagel is the best hope for a reduced US military. Ref #1 (Mel) , the US drones although operated by the DOD are under the direct order of the CIA and the National Security team reporting directly to the POTUS. Hagel is a reasonable man , a lot more reasonable that many other hawkish possible candidates. A lesser evil I admit. Israel firsters are the ones opposing his nomination especialy senator Lindsey Graham and senator Cruz.

#2:On all points U stated,I agree.I approve of any US Vet who'd rather bring the troops home,downsize USA's aggressive military footprint/COST on the planet(not needed now)& SERVES USA first &last,not belligerent FOREIGN Israel,or AIPAC lobbyist bribery!As a US Vet &patriot myself,who believes in strength thru'MORAL peace,ETHICAL diplomacy,RESPECTFUL dialogue,Constitutional Equal Justice Under Law,any USpub/servant who sides with Israel over Hagel,should MOVE to Zionist Israel,permanently!

I for one have the belief that unless someone is an actual criminal, the President should get to pick who he wants to head an agency. And I stand by that in this case. Now, having said that: what bothers me about Hagel is how unintelligent he seemed. He really came across as dull, with absolutely no grasp of the material at all. But if the President wants someone unintelligent and mediocre, that is his prerogative. I doubt Hagel will be able to stand up to the Pentagon bureaucracy at all.
