NABLUS (Ma'an) -- A Nablus court on Monday sentenced two doctors to one year prison terms after finding them guilty of negligence.

The unidentified doctors were sentenced in absentia after an incident from 2003 was brought to the court.

The court heard that on Feb. 11, 2003, a Palestinian Authority police officer was admitted to the emergency room of a Qalqiliya hospital, where doctors decided he needed an appendectomy.

He was then transferred to a Nablus hospital, where medics performed the surgery. After the operation, the complainant suffered from severe abdominal pains, and a doctor told him that parts of his intestine and colon had been injured during the previous operation, and had to be removed.

Both the doctor performing the original surgery and the doctor who signed the original discharge papers were sentenced.
