GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Palestinian detainees in Israel's Nafha jail will launch hunger strike action on Sunday in protest against the death of a prisoner in Megido jail, a Fatah prisoners group said Saturday.

Arafat Jaradat, 30, from the Hebron village of Sair, died on Saturday in Israel's Megido Prison, Palestinian Authority Minister of Detainees Issa Qaraqe said.

Israeli media had earlier reported that Jaradat suffered a cardiac arrest.

The Fatah prisoners group said that prisoners in Nafta jail would launch strike action to condemn Jaradat's death, with the group calling on the international community to protect Palestinian prisoners.

Qaraqe told Ma'an that he holds the Israeli government responsible for Jaradat's death and demanded an immediate inquiry into the circumstances behind his death.

Jaradat was arrested this week and was not involved in ongoing hunger strike action by Palestinian prisoners, he added.

A spokeswoman for the Israel Prison Service did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
