EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- Gunmen opened fire on an Egyptian police car in the Sinai peninsula on Tuesday, injuring one officer, security officials said.
Muhammad Hilmi was injured when gunmen opened fire on a police convoy, Egyptian security officials told Ma'an. The convoy was carrying police officers to a Sinai destination to spend their weekend leave.
Police have opened an investigation into the incident.
Two years after the revolution that toppled president Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's Islamist rulers are contending with a rise in militant activity in the Sinai region that borders Israel and the Gaza Strip.
