JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- Al-Quds University suspended classes on Tuesday after a fight broke out near the campus in Abu Dis.
"Because of the events that happened near the campus in Abu Dis, the actions of some students who were drawn into it, and to preserve the safety and health of students, faculty and staff until the period of danger is over it was decided that the university will be closed until the morning of Saturday, May 9," the university's administration said in a statement.
Students told Ma'an that a fight broke out in front of the law faculty. University security guards threw the brawling students out of the campus, where the fight escalated as families joined in with rocks and firearms.
Police arrived to disperse the fight, and several people were injured, students said.
The university called on students and staff to reject this kind of behavior in order to maintain academic progress, warning that the campus would close for longer periods should the events be repeated.
Student bodies also announced that classes would be suspended for the rest of the week to avoid any more clashes.
