PA approves plan to register UNESCO sites
Published Wednesday 06/03/2013 (updated) 29/04/2013 14:58
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority cabinet on Tuesday decided to form a committee to prepare applications to register sites on UNESCO's world heritage list.

Omar Awadallah, the head of UN file in the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said that the committee's mission was to prepare heritage sites for the list to protect them from harm.

Each ministry has been asked to cooperate with the UNESCO committee, and will prepare the files.

"For example, the Ministry of Culture will present the Palestinian narrative to register it as intangible cultural heritage," while a different department would be charged to register the Dead Sea as a body of water.

In January, Palestinian experts finalized Palestine's 2013 submission to the World Heritage Committee, proposing the ancient Bethlehem village of Battir as a heritage site.

The committee will vote on whether Battir takes World Heritage status at the June general conference.

Palestine was admitted to the UN cultural agency in 2011, and last June UNESCO designated Bethlehem's Church of the Nativity and the nearby pilgrimage route as a World Heritage site.

Battir village, with a population of about 4,500, uses an ancient system of irrigation that has provided fresh water to the community for centuries.

The proposed route of Israel's separation wall will damage the terraces used for irrigation and cut off villagers from their fields and source of income.

Israel should "approve plan to register UNESCO sites" also:
- The Temple Mount (under the Mosque) in East Jerusalem,
- The Tombs of the Patriarchs (in the Mosque) in Hebron,
- The Tomb of Rachel outside of Efrath/Bethlehem, and
- The Tomb of Joseph outside of Schem/Nablus !!!!

Israel could approve plans to register sites in Hebron, Bethlehem, & Nablus.
But, that would no more make such sites part of Israel, than this plan will make such sites part of "Palestine."
That will only happen when negotiations are completed, compromise made, and a comprehensive peace agreement signed !!

The City of Bethlehem MAY be Palestinian "territory", since the 1993 Oslo Accords gave it to Palestinian control, for an interim period, BUT: - the "ancient village of Battir" is PROBABLY in the Area C territory that the same Accords gave to Israel's control, for an interim period, and - the "Dead Sea as a body of water" is DEFINITELY in the territory that the same Accords gave to Israel's control, for an interim period

Battir (aka Betar, Khirbet el-Yahud, a modern arab village near Bethlehem, is ID'd as the last stronghold of the 2nd Bar-Kochba Revolt against the Romans (135CE). Tradition teaches that the village also contains the tomb of the Tannaic sage/jewish scholar, Eleazar of Modi'im. Does this mean that jew-hating Arabs are seeking to declare a jewish heritage site? Does this mean arabs are acknowledging the history of the jews in Judea & Samaria? Will wonders never cease?
