Palestinians clash with soldiers near Jenin
Published Thursday 07/03/2013 (updated) 09/03/2013 10:43
JENIN (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Thursday installed a flying checkpoint at a village in the northern West Bank, leading to clashes with locals.

Soldiers erected a checkpoint at the entrance to Yamun, west of Jenin, and stopped dozens of vehicles. Local youth threw stones and bottles at the checkpoint and soldiers fired large amounts of tear gas at the protesters, a Ma'an reporter said.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said a checkpoint was deployed in the area "following security assessments." She said Palestinians threw rocks at security forces, who responded with "riot dispersal means."

Israeli forces deployed in heavy numbers in the area, around villages Silat al-Harithiya, Tinik, Zububa and Rummana on Thursday, witnesses told Ma'an.

Military patrols were seen traveling between Yamun and Zubaba.

As an abstraction, this is all kind of interesting. All government depends on legitimacy to some extent -- even the most hated regime is able to function because its role as 'the government' is accepted. Its subjects may evade, passively resist, and even spasmodically defy -- but ultimately, they accept that the government is the government. Israel lacks this. She is attempting to rule without legitimacy in any form. Her 'subjects' do not -- cannot -- cease resisting.

About 99% of Palestinians are governed by either the PA or Hamas, & the other 1% will "ultimately accept that the government" situation, or those that choose to "clash" with soldiers will injured or killed for decades or even centuries to come, and their bad choices, will harm their children's future, and the potential of their proposed statehood !!!

#1 Interesting Colin but I think too abstract. I think Israel is two entities. An established state within the '67 border (you can argue its legitimacy but not that it's established) AND a wholly criminal, illegitimate enterprise in occupied Palestine. Israel proper HAS the "legitimacy" you're talking about because the people, Israelis, without doubt "accept that the government is the government." In fact the criminality in the WB is only possible BECAUSE it's accepted IN Israel that the leaders

(contd.) know what they're doing. In the OPT, the idea of the people conferring legitimacy is irrelevant. They're never asked. In Israeli eyes, West Bank Palestinians have the status of "widlife" that came with the territory, to be culled, corralled or harrassed until it dies out or leaves. The "legitimacy" of Israel beyond the Green Line has nothing to do with them (the people who "cannot -- cease resisting.") It's conferred by Israelis back home who support "the Government".
