Gaza man confesses to strangling sister
Published Sunday 10/03/2013 (updated) 13/03/2013 12:49
BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- A man has confessed to strangling his 23-year-old sister to death in Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip on Friday, police told a rights group.

The woman's body was brought to the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital in the early hours of Friday morning, the Palestinian Center for Human Rights said in a statement.

Police told PCHR the woman's father and two brothers were arrested on suspicion of murder, and one of her brothers confessed to strangling her to protect "family honor."

According to a 2011 survey by the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, some 73.1 percent of never-married women in Gaza have been exposed to violence by a family member in their lifetime.

Of these women, 92.4 percent were sexually abused and 71.2 percent were physically abused.

Figures are even higher in the West Bank, where 84.8 percent of women have been exposed to violence by a relative. Most of these women -- 93.8 percent -- were sexually abused, while 84.2 percent were physically abused.

This article was amended to correct that 73.1 percent, not 73.6 percent, of women in Gaza have been exposed to violence by a family member.

Violence against women is not acceptable. It should be stopped. It is incumbent on all to send the strong message that it is not acceptable. Legislaters , prosecutors , police , clerics ,Movie makers , media , teachers , fathers and mothers , should work in harmony to stop this . Violence against women strikes at the fabric of society. An educated and free woman , educates a whole family. An abused woman , results in a broken and struggling family....

What's wrong with "JoeUSA"? Is he getting mellow? Usually he keeps on ranting about "Israehell" and "ZioNazis". His latest missive reads almost civilized not from the usual savage. The meds must have kicked in!

These statistics are way over-exaggerated. Sexual abuse against women here is very low, while I must admit, the physical abuse is rather high, but not just against women. This also depends on what we define as abuse, which is far more severe than a simple spanking.

Hamid - how would you know how many women have been abused? It is not a thing muslim women admit to given the retribution that will come their way. And you admit physical abuse is very high against both sexes - do your males have no self control at all?
