PA: 50,000 drug addicts in East Jerusalem, West Bank

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- The Palestinian Authority minister of health said Sunday that there are an estimated 50,000 drug addicts in East Jerusalem and the occupied West Bank.

Hani Abdin told Ma'an that the figures have encouraged the ministry to exert efforts to raise awareness about drug addiction and work with partner organizations to fight drug use.

Director of public health, Dr. Asad Ramlawi, told Ma'an that a plan is being prepared by the ministry to support civil society groups tackling drug use and a hospital, expected to be completed in 2015, is being built in Ramallah to treat drug addicts.

Last year, anti-drugs campaigner Abdul Jabbar Yaraqan told Ma'an that figures for drug addiction in Israeli-controlled East Jerusalem are hard to estimate accurately.

In Shufat refugee camp, an area beyond the Palestinian Authority's reach, Palestinian drug addicts even say Israeli authorities have abandoned the problem on purpose, Yaraqan said.

The PA and Zionists both collaborated to flood the Palestinian streets with drugs.

Young Palestinians graduate from cigarettes to drugs.Teaches, parents , doctors, elders look the other side. There is no anti smoking campaign in Palestine. If this trend goes on Palestine will be a land without Palestinians.

Narcotics Anonymous is an excellent program and I hope we can bring it here. It will work well because of the strong belief our culture has in God.

The only solution for this crap is personal, strong intervention to control the drug addict's life. That's right ... CONTROL. That means a drug intervener is going to command him, live with and tell him what to do damn near every waking second of his life till he hates the presence of the drug intervener and is helped to get his damn ass to run his life beneficially. For drug sellers: Forget prison. Their hands should be chopped off at the wrist. I'd volunteer and be damn glad to do that.

Palestinians are just like other people. There are tens of thousands of Israeli drug addicts. And Jordanian and Lebanese and Egyptian. There are those of us who see Fayyad and Abbas building the institutions needed for a country, and we want this to continue instead of wasting time blaming. Too bad Arafat and the stupid intifada killed so much of the cooperation and progress that was happening. I can only suggest in the strongest terms the Palestinians return to peace talks.
