GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Police forces in the Gaza Strip began using speed radars on Monday to monitor driving offenses, an official said.

Khalil al-Zayan, spokesman for Gaza's ministry of transportation, told Ma'an that the measure aims to reduce speeding on the main coastal road and Saladin street, where the majority of traffic accidents take place.

Anyone caught breaking the speed limit of 80 kph will be fined 50 shekels ($14), al-Zayan said.

I think this is a great idea. I would make the fine one for a first offense and increase it for repeat offenders. I don't know if the roads where radar is being used has traffic lights at intersections or not, but here in the US, more and more states are installing them in cities and on county roads. The photo shows reality that can't be blamed away. The fine for running a red light with a photo as proof costs the driver approximately $90.00.
