Obama meets Arab American leaders ahead of visit
Published Tuesday 12/03/2013 (updated) 14/03/2013 11:56
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- President Barack Obama on Monday met Arab American leaders who urged him to deliver a message of hope to the Palestinian people on his Middle East trip this month, even though he has made clear he will not use the visit to launch a new Israeli-Palestinian peace initiative.

Obama hosted about 10 leaders at the White House just four days after holding talks with representatives of major Jewish organizations in preparation for his travels to Israel, the occupied West Bank and neighboring Jordan.

The White House has yet to officially announce the dates for the trip, but Israeli news media have reported that Obama will start in Israel on March 20.

Obama met the group on Monday to seek input for his meetings in the region. He is expected to hold separate talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, President Mahmoud Abbas and Jordan's King Abdullah.

"He underscored that the trip is an opportunity for him to demonstrate the United States' commitment to the Palestinian people - in the West Bank and Gaza - and to partnering with the Palestinian Authority as it continues building institutions that will be necessary to bring about a truly independent Palestinian state," a White House official said.

Obama also told them he would "reiterate America's commitment to Israel's security," the official said.

Many Palestinians have been disappointed by Obama's failure to do more to advance a peace deal, despite having declared Middle East diplomacy a high priority when he took office.

The Obama administration has opposed recent Palestinian statehood bids at the United Nations while at the same time criticizing Israeli settlement expansion on occupied land.

Obama told Jewish leaders on Thursday he would not be carrying a new peace plan when the arrives in the region, though he did not rule out a diplomatic push at a later date. The West's nuclear standoff with Iran and the civil war in Syria are expected to top his agenda.

"We are pleased to have shared with President Obama our recommendations and vital messages that he should convey to the Palestinian people," Arab American groups said in a joint statement.

"The United States, through sustained, balanced, constructive engagement, can facilitate a peaceful, lasting resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - a resolution that is essential to long-term security in the Middle East."

The statement was from the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee, American Task Force for Palestine, American Federation of Ramallah Palestine and Arab American Institute.

Who wants to bet that the first ones in line to meet Obama were the Uncle Toms at the American Taskforce on Palestine, Hussein Ibish and Ziad Asali whom do not represent the interests of Palestinians at all.

Compared to the Jewish leaders once in a while meeeting with Arab Amercian leaders doesn't have nay significance. Seems that Jewish leaders either in or out of US actually visit White House more than the non-jews. This tells something?

I am sure teh Arab leaders were told of Obama's committment to Israel is unshakeable. I am sure he also reminded them that the only people that feel this way are the ones that hate Israel....When are the Arabs going to realize that America is not their friend. A choice that America made long time ago. America is an impediment to a just peace in the ME.

@ 6) Why do you think Arabs haven't realized that the US isn't our friend ? The people and the governments are not the same thing. Google 'Arab attitude to America' and you'll find polls by moderate American-Palestinian Shibley Telhami/Brooking Institute and James Zogby among others. Results from latest Zogby: positive attitude to the US: 5% in Egypt, 12% in Morocco, 23% in Lebanon, 30% in KSA.

No American interference means no veto. No interference equals no financing. No interference equals even playing field. No interference equals recognition of both legal states. No interference equals recognition of UN resolutions. No interference equals recognition of international law and courts.

Jihane , I was being sarcastic about the likes of Abbas who is still clinging to the hope that America will push Israel to make peace. The USA will never do that. Only American Jews , who I do not see in the near future , pushing the US government to pressure Israel and push it to peace.....

This upcoming trip is total crap for everyone. The only reason we're involved is to camouflage the bumps in our PM's relations with him (and probably the best part of this trip is when Netanyahu sees Air Force One depart). It's a total farce for him to meet the Palestinians. The Americans have lied to and betrayed the Palestinians for so damn long it's--as I've said a million times already--sickening and pathetic. He can show us his Nobull Piss Prize; we'll show him our settlements.

President Obama would like to express his commitment to the Palestinians of the West Bank and Gaza while at the same time supplying Israel with the means to murder, imprison and torture them by the thousand? What sort of world is this, where such hypocritical attitudes and statements are accepted as valid by the millions of people who chose these so called 'leaders' to represent them?
