HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Israeli authorities are neglecting a prisoner who suffers from cancer, the Palestinian Prisoners Society said Monday.
A PPS lawyer visited Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh in Eshel prison and had to wait for an hour as Abu Hamdiyeh was too sick to attend the meeting. When he arrived, the prisoner "seemed unable to hold up his head" and had difficulty speaking, the lawyer said.
Abu Hamdiyeh, from Hebron, has throat cancer and is only being given pain killers, according to his lawyer. He is not receiving health care inside the prison and is only treated when he is taken to the Soroka Hospital.
"This is another journey of suffering," he told the lawyer.
Abu Hamdiyeh was detained in 2002 and sentenced to life. He has lost 15 kg and is unable to eat, the PPS said.
The PPS held Israeli authorities responsible for Abu Hamdiyeh's life and urged international human rights organizations to intervene.
