Israeli forces surround new 'village'

BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Wednesday surrounded a new tent village erected by Palestinian activists in Eizariya east of Jerusalem.

An Israeli military spokeswoman said hundreds of Palestinians established "an illegal settlement" and that security forces were in the area "to maintain order."

She said soldiers arrested the driver of a truck loaded with equipment including tents.

Mohammad Khatib, a spokesman for the activists, said soldiers handed protesters a document declaring the area a closed military zone.

"We are staying. We are Palestinians, and we will stay here. They will have to evacuate us. They will have to use their power to do it, but we will not do it by ourselves," Khatib told Ma'an.

"We are staying here because this is Palestinian land. This is our land, and no one has a right to evacuate us."

As US President Barack Obama arrived in Israel, activists set up 15 tents on a hillside near the site of the Bab al-Shams protest village that Israeli forces tore down in January.

They have named the new neighborhood Ahfad Younis, after the main character in the novel Bab al-Shams.

In a statement, the activists described the initiative as “first, to claim our right as Palestinians to return to our lands and villages, second, to claim our sovereignty over our lands without permission from anyone."

The activists said it aimed to highlight their opposition to the Obama administration's policies in the region, saying that it has been "complicit in Israeli occupation and colonialism."

"An administration that used the veto 43 times ... in support of Israel and against Palestinian rights, an administration that grants military aid to Israel of over three billion dollars annually, can’t have any positive contribution to achieve justice," the statement said.

Afhad Younis means "the grandchildren of Younis"... so this village was established by the heirs of the character in Bab Al-Shams

Something I don't understand about Israel. Before WW2 and the Nazi extermination of the Jews, Jews in Europe to include Germany were very satisfied living in Europe, after the extermination of the Jews they somehow realized that they had a promise land giving to them by a God. Suddenly its. their homeland, Jerusalem their eternal capital and every inch is theirs. Where were they before the Holocaust?.

@joefattal.
UH, perhaps you are not well versed in history. there has ALWAYS been jewes living in israel/palestine. from the crusades in the 1200s which killed thousands of jews AND muslims, all the way back to jesus, and even further back. Jews also lived in arab countries. It has always been a jewish homeland, even before islam existed. WW2 just gave a pretext to jews to get a land where they could live because they were opressed everywhere else.

Joe, if you want you can Skype me and I will be happy to give you a very detailed explanation of where they were before, including, Iraq, Syria, Libya, Iran and Europe, and what happened to them in each area that brought them to Israel. You just tell me how many 1000s of years you want to go back, or not. Ever wonder why it's called "Hebron" and has been for 1000s of years? Do you know what happened to the Jewish population of Hebron in the 1920s? Skype me, it is on.

"We are Palestinians", and They are Jews. "We will stay here", until "They evacuate us", as We would do to them, if situations were reversed !!!

Andrew: Jow won't skype you. Like nearly all the mindless commentators (and I use this term loosely) on Maan, the mind's made up, there is a lack of knowledge and no clear intent to educate themselves; actually, most hate Jews and take it out on Israel. If you keep reading this website and its ignorant journalists (and I use this term loosely as well) and the Talkbacks you will see how deplorable this news service really is.

Robert, yes I despise you and those like you who consider themselves part of the worlds latest master race. You are criminals, sophisticated criminals, that need locking up. I despise people like you regardless of their religion. There are Muslims and Christians right up there with you. The world is starting to understand that calling someone a Jew hater is how Zionists try and silence those who speak up.

Hi Robert, whatever the legitimate claims of the Jews to the land (from recent and ancient history) and whatever the history of armed resistance (call it freedom fighting, call it terrorism) nothing justifies the collective punishment and military rule over millions of men, women, and children. Until occupation/apartheid is ended, everything else is subterfuge and complicity. It's a package deal; defend Zionism = defend occupation/apartheid. That sounds quite unJewish to me and most Jews I know.

To Mel, I've seen you post many times after a long anti Zionist, slightly anti Semitic rant, that you have many jewish friends back in America so your not a Jew hater. Time and time again you talk of the situation in the palestinian territories as if everything is caused by israel because they're zionists. Now I see you running to the defense of your jewish friends integrity, maybe take a break from talking for other people I have a feeling you don't speak for everyone.

To # 11, what you are saying is pure nonsense, what the world should understand is that so any people all over the worlkd think like you, and think its ok to discriminate against jews. Dont forget the history of the jews, they have had it much worse than palestinians do now and have gone through thousands of year being persecuted because of the fact that they were jewish. A hate speech is a hate speech, and should be recognized for what it is, and should be silenced no zionist conspiracy here.

You know Mel i find your comparison of Nazi's to Israeli's rather innacurate and offensive. Especially since many jews that founded that state lived through an annihilation of genocidal proportions. To compare Israeli treatment of Palestinians to what Nazi Germany did to Jews is wrong on many levels. Let me know when Netanyahu puts in the order for them to be rounded up and gazed to death because they are muslim, then I might agree with you. Until then you might wanna think before u write
