Israel opens fire at Gaza fishermen to impose new limit
Published Saturday 23/03/2013 (updated) 25/03/2013 12:09
GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces opened fire at fishermen off Gaza's coast on Saturday, forcing them to comply with a newly imposed reduced fishing zone following a rocket attack on southern Israel.

Israel's army announced Thursday that the fishing zone for Palestinians in Gaza would be reduced from six to three miles following a rocket attack.

Fishermen in Gaza told Ma'an that Israel's navy opened fire at them on Saturday to prevent them from going out further than 3 miles.

Mahfouth Kabariti, head of a federation for fishermen and water sports, confirmed that the Israeli navy had set up new signs defining the permitted fishing zone.

The zone had been extended to 11 km as part of an Egyptian-brokered ceasefire that ended an eight-day conflict between Israel and Hamas in November, in which 166 Palestinians and six Israelis were killed.

The newly imposed Israeli restriction does not necessarily mean that Israel has abandoned the ceasefire agreement, Gaza-based political analyst Wisam Afifa told Ma'an.

Rather, Israel is trying to use the terms of the agreement which affect humanitarian issues as a means to exert pressure on Hamas and other Palestinian resistance factions to adhere to the ceasefire deal, he said.

"When missiles are fired by an unidentified source in Gaza, that leaves question marks about the launchers and their goals," he added.

Hamas complained to Egypt on Friday after Israel suspended part of a Cairo-brokered truce agreement. An Egyptian official confirmed that the Hamas complaint had been received, saying Israel had complained separately about the rocket attack.

The official said Cairo would contact both sides to "restore their commitment to the truce".

Magles Shoura al-Mujahedeen, a hardline Islamist Salafi faction with a small presence in Gaza and the neighboring Egyptian Sinai, claimed responsibility for the salvo on Sderot.

In an online statement, the group said it had struck during Obama's visit to show up Israeli air defenses - a likely reference to Israel's US-backed Iron Dome rocket shield.

Quite right too. Please do not allow your Gazan armed military factions to fire rockets at our towns, when the US President comes to visit Israel.

There will be no peace until Israel wants it! Israel - stop your settlements, which are in breach of UN sanctions! Do not treat the Arabs in Israel as second class citizens. Israel - what about your nuclear weapons - you will not even sign up to UN IAEA inspections to your facilities.

I FIND IT AMAZING THAT WHOEVER MAKES A COMMENT ABOUT ISRAEL/GAZA THEY NEVER REFER TO ROCKETS BEING FIRED INTO ISRAEL ON A DAILY BASIS FOR 20 YEARS.
THE ARABS IN ISRAEL HAVE A GREAT LIFE THEY HAVE WHAT NO OTHERE ARAB COUNTRY GIVES THEIR PEOPLE. JOBS, GOOD HOUSING, FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT, FREE HOSPITAL TREATMENT,EDUCATION, BUT MOST OF ALL DEMOCRACY AND A VOICE IN GOVERNMENT

Ma'an, i'm extremely surprised and disturbed that you did not include any reference to or mention of the dozens of very well-documented izraeli violations of this ceasefire agreement previous to this single violation of Gaza, some of which have resulted in the death of innocent Palestinians. why not???? the disproportionate violations of the ceasefire by izrael has become so common & frequent that they too are being normalized like their other crimes, omitting it in the article only adds to this

Perhaps we don't refer to Gazan rockets because they have killed so few people and do so little damage, unlike the huge warheads dropped on Gaza, not to mention the White Phosphorus, the DIME weapons and Flechettes used on Gazans (all illegal under international law). As for remarks about freedom of movement, good housing, jobs, democracy, I cannot believe a countryman of mine, from this safe and comfortable land, has so little conscience he will say such things.

Maybe they're upset at being treated as second-class citizens by an occupying army in their own country. Just a guess....

3) I take it that you are being sarcastic? Whenever there is a mention of Palestinian rockets it is never made clear how few Israelis are actually killed or injured, very few. However, the number of Palestinians killed by tank shells, bombs from F16s, white phosphorous, flechettes and DIME weapons is in the thousands. Not to mention those killed by rubber bullets deliberately fired to kill and injure peaceful protestors.

"There are more than 50 Israeli laws that discriminate against Palestinian citizens of Israel in all areas of life, including their rights to political participation, access to land, education, state budget resources, and criminal procedures. Some of the laws also violate the rights of Palestinians living in the 1967 OPT and Palestinian refugees.....This database collects text, analyses, and legal action for present and proposed discriminatory laws in Israel and the OPT.....(www.adalah.org/eng/)

Open fire at fishermen. Who are going to get fish.this is worse then I thought. Don't make people of Gaza pay for what maybe one person has done.this is not the way to have peace.

To Elsa/Germany #1 'Quite right too. Please do not allow your Gazan armed military factions to fire rockets at our towns, when the US President comes to visit Israel.' What German towns did Gazan factions fire rockets at?

@Alex Mitchell: The Arabs in Israel can't even get on the same bus as the Jewish or walk on the same side of the street as Israeli people. I wouldn't say they have a great life in Israel, on the contrary they live as marginalized. However, here is about Gaza, totally different situation though. Palestinian is not justified to fire rockets but neither Israel it was to build settlements. They have to stop their settlements or it won't be no peace. Ever.

What have Gazan fishermen got to do with rockets fired by "a hardline Islamist Salafi faction" in the Sinai? Well, nothing, but it wouldn't be called COLLECTIVE punishment if they did! Would it?

# 3 - "they never refer to rockets being fired into Israel on a daily basis for 20 years." NOT TRUE You read too much hasbara. Go to ordinary news sources instead "Arabs in Israel have a great life"? Read about the restrictions placed on Arab Israeli citizens. "Jobs" they are discriminated re jobs. "good housing?" LOL. Freedom of movement?" Can't visit their relatives in Gaza or the WB. Can't go to parts of Jerusalem. "A voice in govt." That's is really funny. You should get out more!

I ignore the rocket fire into israel because the pro israeli media can never stop mentioning it and use it to justify all sorts of war crimes. There are enough criminal institutions calling themselves news organizations using rocket attacks as a justification for torture, murder, stealing by israel. israel is truly a joke.

"I take it that you" believe that "Palestinian rockets" are OK as long as "few Israelis are actually killed or injured," so consider how you would want your state (UK) to respond, if it's neighbor (Ireland) were firing rockets at you !!

#22 I'd be pretty worried. However, don't forget that we were attacked in England by the IRA on many occasions. We didn't however use military weapons on the people of Ireland in order to kill ten times as many as we had lost. We also didn't steal land in Ireland, or deprive the Irish people of water and food.

#24. Ferdinand On the other hand, you never removed the Protestants "Settlers" from Northern Ireland to have English territory continuously shelled from the evacuated land...

#24 Moshik 'Continously shelled'? I think not, as someone said further up the thread if there were frequent shells CNN and probably the BBC would be announcing the fact with great joy. I would also say that although Israel has evacuated Gaza they exert a total blockade and have created the largest prison in the world. What have the occupants done exactly to be imprisoned like this?

#26 Ferdinand Facts help. The town of Shderot was hit by over 6K rockets. Why is the number of Israeli civilian casualties important, haven't Hamas attempted to maximize it (See: UN Report). Similarly, to the war on London (WWII), The number of casualties was due to a developed warning and sheltering system. Gaza's leaders could as well poured their money into sheltering the population instead of cold bloodily choosing to launch rockets from school yards! (2009).

28 ) Ferdirand / UK
28/03/2013 18:35
#27 Moshik Okay, you have brought Ireland and London into the thread. Let's stick to Israel and facts. Have you a verified international source for 'over 6K rockets'? Over what period? How many casualties? Why haven't your press and international press reported such?
