HEBRON (Ma’an) – A swarm of locusts on Wednesday invaded the southern Hebron area in the southern West Bank. Staff of the ministry of agriculture in Hebron launched a campaign to control the pests .

Director of the Hebron office of the Palestinian ministry of agriculture Badr al-Hawamdah said his teams in cooperation with local councils started to fight the locusts which arrived in the villages of Suba and Khirbet ad-Deir in northwest Hebron.

According to al-Hawamdah, a swarm of some 1 million locusts invaded Suba, and was sprayed with pesticides. About 80 percent of the locusts have been exterminated, he said. Meanwhile, another million locusts are being sprayed near ad-Deir village.

Most of the invading insects, he added, are yellow locusts. He highlighted that this family of locusts would lay eggs and quickly multiply if they are not fought within 10-15 days. They could cause a natural disaster if they were not sprayed, he said.

“Due to cold weather, locusts prefer to remain close to the ground and that makes it easy to fight them quickly,” he added.
