RAMALLAH (AFP) - President Mahmoud Abbas is to meet on Sunday in Amman with US Secretary of State John Kerry, who is pushing for a renewal of peace talks, a Palestinian official said.

"US Secretary of State John Kerry will meet with President Abbas next Sunday in Amman," the official told AFP on Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Israeli media reported that Kerry would arrive in Israel on Saturday night for talks with the leadership, but there was no confirmation from the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, whose spokesman refused to comment on the issue.

According to the Maariv daily, Kerry was planning to visit Jerusalem and Ramallah "once every two weeks" in what it said was partly a bid to "resuscitate" the Arab Peace Initiative.

"Israel should therefore consider the advantages it may gain from such an initiative," the newspaper said.

The Arab Peace Initiative, tabled in 2002 by Saudi Arabia and endorsed by the Arab League, proposed a normalization of ties with Israel in return for its pullout from all lands occupied during the 1967 Six Day War.

Separately, Abbas was on Monday to travel to Qatar for a meeting of the Arab Peace Initiative committee for talks likely to focus on US efforts to revive the stalled peace process, the Palestinian official said.

Kerry, who took up his post on Feb. 1, made his first visit to the region alongside US President Barack Obama last month, holding one-on-one talks with the Israeli and Palestinian leadership in Jerusalem and Amman on March 24.

"I think the stage has been set for the possibilities that the parties can hopefully find a way to negotiations," Kerry said in Baghdad a day later, describing the meetings as "a good beginning."

Direct peace talks broke down just weeks after they were started in September 2010 over Israel's refusal to freeze illegal settlement building on occupied Palestinian land.

Since then, the PLO says it will not return to the table without a settlement freeze while Israel has agreed to resume talks only if there are no such pre-conditions.

ABBAS to Kerry: the USA must pressure Israel,
to surrender to the PA's pre-negotiations demands !!

KERRY to Abbas: We have already, and Israel did already !!

But still the PA did not come to (Amman 2012) negotiations until pressured,
and still it did not accept that they must compromise, at the negotiations, so
Now it is the PA's turn to demonstrate a willingness to compromise,
or there will be NO NEGOTIATIONS AND NO NEW STATE CREATED.

U.S. Secretary of State Kerry's planned meeting with Palestinian President Abbas is just more of worthless, useless and asinine meetings that never amount to a damn thing. His plans to visit Jerusalem and Ramallah every 2 weeks only mean instead of wasting his and everyone's time he and everyone are literally THROWING their time away. FORGET about the Arab Peace Initiative; it's DEAD. I'd say more but I'm more concerned right now about contacting the Knesset and IDF about the horrors (cont.)

of continued terrorism by Israelites against completely innocent (and until otherwise shown I have no reason to believe they're not innocent) Palestinian victims, such as the Palestinian school bus and Palestinian farmer attacks that MNA has reported. Yes, I definitely READ those reports and always condemn these sickening and horrific acts of senseless violence by these insane Israelites while calling for arrest, prosecution and imprisonment (even execution) of those responsible. fully know comments mean nothing unless concrete action is done to remedy such horrors. So forgive me If I sound like an "ambulance-chaser" (someone who offers sympathy and remorse over and over but can't or doesn't do much to help the situation) ... I'm not. Like Palestinian W. Bank watcher Ghassan Daghlas (from whom MNA constantly receives Israelite terrorist reports from), I KNOW hell when I see and read about it.

Kerry is a closet-Zionist wimp!He should have coffee with Colin Powell,Condi Rice & share horror stories of how Israel SHREDS the"peace-process"(especially Sharon&Bibi)& always makes sure it's knee-capped before progress is made i.e. Israel giving back what's already been stolen, since 1947! Dance the Zio-bot 2-step Kerry! If you believe Zionism is MORE IMPORTANT than reducing global ANTI-Americanism which threatens our US Nat.Sec. thru' our ONGOING double-standards!? Or,RESTRAIN Israel?

@1&2 -- freezing settlements is NOT a Pal pre-condition! As I am sure you know and have been corrected on many times; STOPPING settlements will be Israel complying with international law -- not simply freezing. Why should the Pals or anyone else trust a rogue nation such as Israel at the negotiating table if, at the very least, they are not willing to comply with the bare minimum of international law as recognised by even the USA?

IF Abbas wants anything to come from a meeting in Jordan,
THEN he needs to meet with Netanyahu, instead of Kerry, or the
- Palestine (Areas A/B & Gaza) situation will remain unchanged, and the
- Disputed Areas C/E1 & E. Jerusalem lands will continue becoming increasingly more Jewish by the day !!

Last that I checked the 2 state sollution is dead. According to the survey #s the Jewish population exceeds the Arabs'. Judea & Samaria will continue to belong to Israel. Jerusalem is the undivided Capital of Israel as we all know.

- The State of Israel has LEGITIMATE HISTORICAL CLAIMS, to West Bank Lands, but the State of PALESTINE (that never existed) DOES NOT, and
- Besides such misinterpretations of "complying with international law",
like yours, the UNGA's, or even the ICC's can be ignored by sovereign states,
in regions where they have sovereignty, and if you disbelieve me, then just look into the Iranian nuclear program and Syrian genocide disputes !!!

13 ) The Road / Not Taken
04/04/2013 15:18
- Palestinians have taken the "Road" of Terror, Resistance, and Talking
with many states, and the recent history shows that
- The Only "Road" that has ever lead to any lands being under Palestinian sovereignty is the "Road" of DIRECT TALKS WITH the State of ISRAEL,
as part of the Oslo Accords, and
- If Palestinians want a real state of their own, then they should realize that direct talks with Israel ARE STILL THE ONLY ROUTE TO real STATEHOOD.

14 ) @ Tibi-7 / Correct
04/04/2013 17:30
You so right, where Palestine will "remain unchanged" or continue to stagnate, while Israel continues to grow and prosper, unless peace talks are concluded with Israel, which requires that first peace talks restart, and second that Palestine make tough compromises !!
