HEBRON (Ma'an) -- Hebron and East Jerusalem shut down on Wednesday in mourning for a cancer-sufferer who died in Israeli custody a day earlier.

Maysara Abu Hamdiyeh, from Hebron, died in Israel's Soroka Hospital aged 63. Palestinian officials say his cancer spread because he was denied treatment by Israeli authorities, who refused to release him.

The Fatah movement in Hebron called for a general strike to mourn the death and urged all residents to respect the period of mourning.

All shops, schools and universities as well as government and community organizations closed on Wednesday across the Hebron district.

Fatah leader in Hebron Kifah al-Uweiwi called on the Palestinian people to support the plight of Palestinians held in Israeli jails.

Shops, restaurants and businesses also shut their doors in mourning in Jerusalem's Old City. All schools affiliated to the Islamic endowment department in Jerusalem suspended classes at 11 a.m., said education ministry official Samir Jibril.

A full strike was also being observed in the northern West Bank city of Nablus where thousands of demonstrators gathered in the city centre for a mass rally, an AFP correspondent said.

In Ramallah and the Gaza Strip, the strike was being partially observed, other correspondents said.

Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinian prisoners refused their breakfast at the start of a one-day hunger strike in protest over Abu Hamdiyeh's death, an Israel Prisons Service spokeswoman said.

"4,600 prisoners refused their breakfast this morning in a protest after the death of a prisoner yesterday," Sivan Weizman said, the figure representing the entire Palestinian prison population.

Abu Hamdiyeh will be given a military funeral after noon prayers in Hebron on Thursday.

Do palestinians ever work? Or, I forgot - they do not need to work - EU and US would give them everything what they want. There are thousands and thousands of palestinian terrorists in the world - they were using terror back from 1950s, few terrorists are dying every day. It can explain why palestinians never work - they need to shut down cities to mourn dead terrorists, they do not have time to work - others people must provide for them when they are mourning dead terrorists.

Two conflicting details. Here the reporter claims the Israeli doctors "refused to treat him" and in another report today in Maan the writer says "Israeli doctors treated him with the wrong medication" Bottom line is both stories are untrue. Their common thread to bad mouth Israel. Go to your own doctors and hospitals in the future.

The only sector these strikes hurts is the Palestinian sector. Any human rights organization that opens Abu Hamdiyeh's file will see that he was convicted for sending a suicide bomber to blow up a restaurant in order to kill as many civilians as possible. Wow. What a hero. Other "prisoners" are also convicted killers who specifically and explicitly went out to kill as many civilians as they could. They stay in jail. If they get cancer they may die too. Just like people not in jail who get sick.

Great man, dies at age 64, cancer of the esophagus, inveterate smoker but...it's Israel's fault, always Israel's fault because, well, Jews rule the world, rule medicine, finance, technology, the arts...it's always the Jews' fault, isn't it, Dear Readers of Maan?

Mourning a terrorist and inveterate cigarette smoker who died of cancer of the esophagus makes a good deal of sense. Actually, it does, given the fact that Westbank Arabs have no legitemate, positive and beneficial elders to model themselves after. This speaks of a society in decay, a corrupt conglomeration of self-serving leaders with rigid, violent ideals and nothing constructive to look forward to. Naturally, the blame must be focused: on Jews, on Israel, never themselves.
