BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Police in Bethlehem have started preparations for the city's marathon, due to be held on Sunday.

Director of Bethlehem police Alaa Shalabi said large numbers of police will be deployed on all main streets to ensure the safety of runners.

Over 250 Palestinian and international runners are set to participate in the event, the first of its kind to take place in Palestine, according to organizers.

The umbrella-organization, Right to Movement, is behind the Palestine Marathon and says that the event aims to "increase the focus on the basic right of freedom of movement."

#1 Mel/USA. Shame the budding athletes in Gaza were banned by the Hamas ''criminals & crazies'', from participating in Gaza city's marathon last month.
