GAZA CITY (Ma’an) -- A 55-year-old former prisoner of Israel threatened to set fire to himself on Thursday in front of a Palestinian Authority office in Gaza City.

Witnesses told Ma’an that the man doused himself with fuel, but employees at the office for the Ministry of Prisoner Affairs stopped him setting fire to himself. They took the ex-detainee to Shifa Hospital.

The man spent five years in Israeli jails and should receive a 1,400-shekel ($393) monthly allowance from the PA. He says he has never received this.

Under Palestinian law, prisoners of Israel are entitled to a monthly allowance by the PA on their release.
