GAZA CITY (Ma'an) -- The Hamas-run government in Gaza plans to execute a number of collaborators with Israel in an attempt to "eradicate" collaboration this year, a security official said Monday.

Salah Addin Abu Sharkh, director of internal security at the Interior Ministry, said the government had "a clear goal and several means to eradicate this dangerous epidemic," including executing convicted collaborators.

Abu Sharkh said the anti-collaboration campaign, which ran from March 12 to May 12, achieved most of its goals and resulted in a number of arrests. He said legal procedures against the suspects were ongoing, in an interview on the ministry's website.

"Social networks are largely useful in educating our people, though the Israeli occupation makes some attempts to recruit collaborators through these social networks. However, these attempts are incomparable with the huge benefits these networks achieve in raising awareness about the dangers of collaboration," Abu Sharkh added.

He said all Palestinian factions in the Gaza Strip cooperated with security services and played a role in fighting collaboration.

In May, a military court in Gaza sentenced two convicted collaborators to death by hanging.

Under Palestinian law, collaboration with Israel is punishable by death.

However all execution orders must be approved by the president before they can be carried out. Hamas no longer recognizes the legitimacy of incumbent Mahmoud Abbas, whose four-year term ended in 2009.

There is a reason why people are seeking the the help of 'outsiders' to relieve their misery, oppression, poverty. Why doesn't hamas ask themselves why do our own kind of people do this? What is hamas DOING to its own kind of people that they want OUT from under their heel of oppression? What is it? Knowledge that there are people elsewhere in the world who have freedoms they don't have? Could it be the eternal quest of the human heart & mind for freedom that drives them to seek a way out?

- The PLO of old, murdered King Hussein's grandfather, for "seeking a way out", that accepted the Jewish State's continued existance, and
- The Hamas of today, will murder PLO leaders for "seeking a way out",
that accepted the Jewish State's continued existance, but
- The Jewish State will continue to both exist and to prosper, while
the people under the PLO and Hamas stagnate in never-ending poverty !!!

@1) Azzi - Collaboration in this sense means treason against your own country & not just asking for humanitarian aid from outsiders. Israel (like any country at war) will use the collaborators to spy, pass information & harm Palestinian interests if it can. Most countries have harsh penalties for this crime. @2) Johnny B - Collaboration is a capital crime under Palestinian law, not blood lust - War & capital punishment are horrible, we can debate, but we don't live in Palestine under occupation.

I agree with #1&3. It all depends on how Hamas DEFINES "collaboration"??Especially among 1.7 million DESPERATE Gazan's who feel that both Hamas &PA/Fatah are on no-ones side but the faction?Hamas must be careful in defining "collaboration",under the suffocation of Israel's illegal blockade/OCCUPATION.Democratically elected Hamas has done a GREAT job of defending Palestinian rights/dignity attacked by Israel. But,having Israel as OPPRESSOR is bad enough!Gazan's don't need 2!

Collaborators everywhere face the death penalty . Look at France, Italy, Checkoslovakia, Hungary, and no doubt lots of other countries, during the war. # 2- Johnny Benson - Didn't hear you plead not to waste lives when Israel was pounding Gaza.

Yes, death is the ONLY fit punishment for collaborators/spies. Hamas must track them all down - including one who lives with his wife and family in Cyprus.
