EL-ARISH, Egypt (Ma'an) -- An Egyptian police officer was shot dead in Sinai on Tuesday as he walked home.

Unidentified gunmen pulled up in a 4x4 truck without number plates and shot the officer several times in the chest, officials told Ma'an. The body was taken to a public hospital in El-Arish.

Egyptian forces clashed with militants in El-Arish overnight, with no injuries reported.

Since the military coup that toppled Mursi after massive nationwide protests against his rule, militant groups have launched almost daily attacks on troops and police in Sinai.

On Sunday, gunmen killed two Egyptian soldiers and a policeman in three separate attacks near El-Arish. On Friday, three civilians were killed as gunmen launched multiple attacks on Egyptian army posts and police stations.
