BETHLEHEM (Ma'an) -- Israeli forces on Wednesday started maintenance operations at Atarot airport in the Qalandia area.
The airport has been closed since the outbreak of the second intifada in 2000.
Witnesses saw Israeli forces cleaning and installing lights on the sides of the runway in what seemed like an effort to restart work on it.
They added that soldiers installed equipment and drove down the main runway in an apparent attempt to test its strength.
An Israeli army spokeswoman did not immediately return calls.
