BEERSHEBA (Ma’an) – For the first time since the creation of Israel, an Arab man will stand for municipal elections in Beersheba scheduled on Oct. 22.

Amir Zreiq, an Arab lawyer from Beersheba, will be the second candidate on the Change 2013 list.

Asked about the motives behind his decision, Zreiq said he was afraid the Arabs in Beersheba did not have a cultural or an educational center because they have never been represented in the municipal council.

“I met two years ago with the mayor Ruvik Danilovich in my capacity as an activist who organizes theater performances and educational activities for the Arabs in Beersheba. I asked him to allow us to use a public hall once a month for two hours and he immediately asked, ‘Who are you? You don’t have a representative in the municipal council, nor do you have an organization or a foundation to represent you.”

These words, added Zreiq, marked an opening for him and “since then I decided that Arabs should be represented in the municipal council of Beersheba.”

About 20,000 Arabs live in Beersheba constituting 10 percent of the population and they have never been represented in the municipal council. Some 8,000 people have the right to vote.

“We can change the face of this generation through helping the weakest groups both in the Arab and the Jewish communities. Our principle is working together hand in hand for the benefit of these groups,” he said.

First Black Congressman elected in the United States: 1870. First Arab municipal councilman elected in Beersheba: ? But there: Israel is, after all, 'for the White man.'

Finally an Arab using his brain. Well done. If you want peaceful co-existence this is the way to do it

@2. There have been two Israeli Arab judges to hold a Supreme Court appointment, and 69 Israeli Arab members of the Knesset since 1949.

To Lilith, The Arabs have always used thier brains. The problem was the israelis always had a gun on the Arab. The israelis kept blowing the Arabs brains out with a machine gun. Amir Zreiq may win and get a community center. He will not get equal rights because of criminality of israeli law and government. He wont be allowed to live in Jewish only settlements. He will be executed by a disappearing squad of israelis if he proves too productive. Ask Anat Kamm or Uri Blau.

Typical misleading comment by Colin. Black Congressmen were elected during Reconstruction because the Union army ran the south. As soon as they left, no Congressmen. And there have been other Arab municipal officials elected In Israel - this is just the first in Beersheba. Look on wikipedia. What an absudlly misleading and ignorant comment. Of course, with all that apartheid, how can he even run for office?

To Kvetcher #4: 'There have been two Israeli Arab judges to hold a Supreme Court appointment, and 69 Israeli Arab members of the Knesset since 1949.' And how many Israeli Jewish judges, and how many Israeli Jewish members of the Knesset?

To USAUSA #6: 'Typical misleading comment by Colin. Black Congressmen were elected during Reconstruction because the Union army ran the south. As soon as they left, no Congressmen. ' Your statement is factually untrue. Look it up.
