JERUSALEM (Ma'an) -- An Israeli settler assaulted a man in East Jerusalem on Sunday, locals said.
Maher Ahmad Mousa Abu Liel, 48, was moderately injured after a settler hit him with a metal rod in the neighborhood of Issawiya, his sister told Ma'an.
Abu Liel was heading to his shop in the Jerusalem neighborhood when he saw a settler assaulting a group local children with an iron rod. He rushed to intervene and was struck over the head with the metal stick, causing severe bleeding.
He was transferred to Hadassa hospital for treatment.
Israeli police detained the settler, Abu Liel's sister said.
There are around 200,000 Jewish settlers in East Jerusalem.
